How to Snowshoe Like a Pro Using These Simple Techniques

Having the ability to softly hover on snow in winter is a great feeling. For anyone that has tried snowshoeing, you begin to realize how easy it is to quickly learn how to snowshoe. The first time may seem slightly awkward but as you take more steps it seems to get easier as you step forward on the snow. It is a great way to be active, enjoy winter and be outside in the natural outdoors, wilderness or nature. There are some simple steps to keep in mind which will make snowshoeing easier and give you the knowledge of an experienced snowshoe pro.

One major thing to consider when snowshoeing is using poles which will help with balance and other movements you may encounter while stepping along the densely snow covered ground as the terrains may also change.

When snowshoeing up a hill, you will want to firmly step down concentrating your weight at the front of the snowshoe and this will compact the snow so you can achieve great grip traction. You would simply then switch to the other foot and repeat the same process. An easier method is to spread the toes of the snowshoes so that the heels are together and then take small steps. A relatively low-skilled sport that is fairly easy on a persons body, snowshoeing has enjoyed a strong jump in popularity over the last few years as people look for alternatives to skiing and snowboarding. Getting away from the noise and crowds has become increasingly sought after for many winter sport enthusiasts. Snowshoeing is ideal for escaping to the backcountry to enjoy solitude and a slower pace far from the crowds. While this is all well and good, there are some safety tips to keep in mind before you head out on any winter trek.

1. To start with, buy quality gear it is well worth the cost. Snowshoes and the related gear have improved tremendously over the years to light-weight,sturdy and very functional. Get the equipment that best fits and is the most comfortable. Aside from snowshoes and poles you will want to make sure you have some other essential gear. Even if you are familiar with the area you are heading into you should always have a map,compass or GPS. Learn how to use these before you head out. A flashlight with extra batteries is also a good idea.
2. Bring additional clothing! This is very important, not only could you get wet and need to change, but weather variations in the backcountry can be frequent and dramatic. Staying dry and warm is a priority. Remember, Hypothermia is the leading cause of death for backcountry mishaps. Hypothermia is when you lose body heat, and subsequently energy and mental coherence.
